Higher academic institutions primarily aim at producing different professionals with necessary skills, competence, responsibilities and higher ethical/moral integrity that are needed in the various development activities of societies/states. Cognizant of these, every country of the world including Ethiopia establishes and expands higher academic institutions that produce skilled human resources.
Department of Statistics is one of the departments under the college of Natural and Computational Sciences in Dire Dawa University. It was launched in 2008/09(2001 E.C.) with the three known missions i.e. Teaching and learning, undertaking research and Community service. The department has been inaugurated with four academic staffs, of which only one is Lecturer and others Graduate Assistants, and by enrolling 40 students by the same year. Currently the department has eighteen staffs of which three are graduate Assistant I, twelve Lecturers, One Assistant Professor and One Technical Assistance and. One on academic staff is on a study leave for their PhD Degree. Starting from 2003 – 2009 E.C about 398 students have been graduated from the Department with BSc. Degree in Statistics. Now, from first year up to a graduating class a total of 240 students are studying in the department.
Like other disciplines in the University the formulation of the curriculum of the Department is in line with missions and visions of both Ministry of Education and the Dire Dawa University. Accordingly, the department has revised its curriculum in two rounds by the nationwide mobilized harmonization of Higher Institutions Curriculum by Higher Education Strategic Center (HESC). It was happened first by harmonizing curriculum cluster wise and finally nationwide where representatives of all cluster universities have appeared in Addis Ababa made thorough critiques on the details of all documents.
