Dire Dawa University Institute of Technology (DDU-IoT) is an autonomous institute under Dire Dawa University (DDU), located in the industrial and commercial city of Dire Dawa, 515 Kms east of Addis Ababa.
The institute was established and started its teaching and learning activities in the 2006/07 academic year. DDU-IoT started its actual operation on March 01, 2007 and enrolled 88 students in the 2007/2008 academic year in the Computer Science Department.
In the 2008/2009 academic year, the School of Technology was established by incorporating seven departments: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Technology and Management, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Surveying Technology.
During the 2008/2009 academic year, 656 students enrolled in Pre-Engineering and 212 students enrolled in the Computer Science Department.
In 2010/11, engineering and technology education at the university was upgraded from the School of Technology to the Institute of Technology by a decision of the Ministry of Education. The School of Technology was officially renamed Dire Dawa Institute of Technology (DDIT).
DDIT became one of the ten institutes established in Ethiopia to support the transition towards an industry-led economy envisioned in national policies and strategies. The transformation allowed the institute to become more autonomous and responsive to regional and national economic needs.
In 2020, the institute was renamed Dire Dawa University Institute of Technology (DDU-IoT).
DDU-IoT is focused on leveraging specialized engineering and technology programs to support regional and national growth.
Currently, in the 2026/2027 academic year, DDU-IoT has three colleges and three schools, offering a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs.
The institute currently offers 17 undergraduate and 14 graduate programs. DDU-IoT also provides undergraduate and postgraduate Extension degree programs in different schools, as well as summer degree programs in Engineering Drawing & Design and Information Technology Education.
Current enrollment has reached more than 3,932 students in undergraduate and graduate programs through regular and non-regular admission modalities, including approximately 1,500 Pre-Engineering students.
DDU-IoT has 460 academic staff in total, of whom 353 are on duty and the remaining 107 are on study leave for their second and third degrees.
In addition, the institute has 32 administrative staff and 82 technical staff, of whom 72 are on duty and 10 are on study leave.
In general, DDU-IoT is a focus area of Dire Dawa University, leveraging its specialized engineering and technology programs to align directly with national policies that prioritize engineering and technology education as a driver of regional and national growth.
