Leadership & Institutional History

Presidents Through the Years

From its formative years as a developing university to its present position within Ethiopia's higher education landscape, Dire Dawa University has been shaped by successive leaders whose visions, decisions and contributions have influenced the University's journey.

A Journey of Leadership

The expansion of higher education in Ethiopia accelerated significantly after 1991, particularly between 1999 and 2007. In 2007 alone, thirteen universities were established across different regions and towns of the country.

Established within this period of rapid expansion, Dire Dawa University emerged among what were historically described as "second generation universities," established to expand equitable access to higher education and contribute to national socio-economic development.

The University's development from a satellite campus of Haramaya University into an independent public university reflects a distinctive journey of institutional growth, transformation and resilience.
