The establishment of the School medicine  of Dire Dawa University can be traced back to 2011 G.C (2004 E.C) with the birth of competency based curriculum (New Innovative Medical Education Initiative) having an objective of alleviating the scarcity of physicians in Ethiopia.

The School started its program by three staff (two of them were expatriates) by enrolling 75 students. The School  is working towards achieving its vision of becoming the premium choice in the nation, competent in Africa and internationally accredited in the field of Medicine by 2025.

The school has been affiliated with Dilchora Referral Hospital to use as a teaching hospital.The School has skill laboratories such as anatomy dissection room, two ICT centers, and one tele education center. To run the program of in-service trainings, the center has one training hall with a capacity to accommodate more than 30 individuals, two breakout room and office equipped with the necessary materials.
