About Us

The Department of History and Heritage Management is one of the first departments opened when Dire Dawa University was inaugurated in 1999 E.C.  Before it got its current name (in a nationally harmonized curriculum from 2005 E.C. on), it was called Department of History and Civics in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. It started it service by accepting of from the first batches of the University with 7 B.A. holding staff. Currently, it is actively working (9 men, 1 female) with 15 instructors of whom 4 (3 men, 1 female) are on postgraduate study.

Graduate Profiles

Graduates in History and Heritage Management are equipped with good knowledge and skills in the fields of history and cultural studies that enable them:

ü  Undertake scientific research in historical, historiographical and cultural aspects of Ethiopia and the Horn

ü  Document Heritages  of the peoples of Ethiopia and the Horn at local, national, and regional levels

ü  Manage Heritages  of the peoples of Ethiopia and the Horn at local, national, and regional levels

ü  Provide consultancy services to governmental and non-governmental organizations and private enterprises on History and Heritage Management issues at local, national, and regional levels

ü  Engage in the tourism and museum sectors as guides, curators, experts, and managers

ü  Serve as History and Heritage Management experts in local, national, regional, and international institutions

ü  Serve as experts in the areas of intra and inter-ethnic and intra and inter religious relations of the region

General information:

Degree nomenclature: Bachelor of Art in History and Heritage Management

Program type: regular

o   3 years degree

o   107 Credits/184 EtCTS required

o   A minimum CGPA of 2.00 with no “F” required for graduation

o   Admission requirement is based on the criteria set by the department DDU and MoSHE

o   Courses are designed in accordance with themes ( like a history of Ethiopia and the horn, a history of Africa, global history, heritage management
