Admissions to all regular undergraduate
programs are processed through the Ministry of Education.

Have natural science background.

Admission Requirement for Advance standing
students
To be eligible for admission into the advance standing midwifery
program, a candidate should:
·
Fulfill the stated criteria by the
Ministry of Education
·
Have graduated from an accredited
college/school with diploma (level IV) in midwifery/nurse.
·
Have obtained a minimum of 2 or 60%
cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in previous diploma program.
·
Have served in midwifery for a minimum of
2 years
·
Present letter of sponsorship or letter
of release from employing institution.
·
Recently certified by center of
competency
·
A midwife is responsible and accountable
to work in partnership with women to give the necessary support, care and
advice during pregnancy, labor and the postpartum period
·
A midwife is responsible and accountable
to provide family planning services, immunization and antenatal care.
·
A midwife is responsible and accountable
to conduct births on her/his own responsibility, and provide care for the
newborn and infant.
·
Provide preventative measures, promote
normal birth, and detect complications in mothers and children, and accessing
of medical care or other appropriate assistance and the carrying out of
emergency measures.
·
Provide health counseling and education,
not only for the woman, but also within the family and the community including
antenatal education and preparation for parenthood and may extend to women’s
health, sexual or reproductive health and child care; certain areas of
gynecology.
·
Do problem-solving researches and apply
findings according to community situation.
·
Should participate in development of
national policies related to adolescents, maternal and child health.
·
Teach, mentor, supervise and guide
maternal and child health work force on her/his score in academic and clinical
areas
·
May practice midwifery skill in any
setting including the home, community, hospitals, clinics or health units.
·
Work in collaboration with different
stake holder in matters related to maternal, adolescent and child health
Upon
completion of the BSc Midwifery program, the graduates will be able to:-
ü Identify normal and
abnormal anatomy and physiology of human body in general and reproductive
system in particular.
ü Assess, diagnose and
manage normal and abnormal pregnancy in women friendly way based on focal ANC,
and refer when necessary.
ü Develop and
implement care plan in midwifery practice.
ü Assess, diagnose and
manage normal/abnormal labor and deliveries, and refer when necessary.
ü Provide
comprehensive care for normal and abnormal postnatal women.
ü Provide care for the
normal and abnormal new born and infant
ü Conduct
surveillance, provide preventive care, manage common problems of the mother and
children, and refer risk cases.
ü Identify common
drugs and anesthetic agents in obstetrics & Gynecology, and use them as
appropriate.
ü Give integrated F/P
counseling and services, mange related complication of various types of
contraceptive methods.
ü Assess, diagnose and
manage HIV/STIs cases in adolescents and women of reproductive age groups.
ü Identify, prepare
and use obstetrical & gynecologic instruments, functions and related
problems.
ü Assess, diagnose and
manage common gynecological problems.
ü Diagnose and manage
abortion effectively and provide safe
post abortion care
ü Conduct and
implement research in midwifery practice to improve the quality of care.
ü Demonstrate/State
the management role of midwifery.
ü Recognizes and
maintains Personal and professional attributes, demonstrating ability to
interact with health care team.
ü Practice and
demonstrate standard infection prevention techniques at all levels of health
care settings.
ü Provide HIV
counseling and testing.
ü Provide ARV’
prophylaxis for mother and newborn to prevent mother to child transmission.
ü Counsel mothers and
care takers on infant feeding options.
ü Perform and evaluate
ultrasound results for diagnostic and therapeutic purpose in midwifery practice
ü Function within
legal and ethical framework, accepting responsibility and accountability for
his or her own practice
ü Be involves in a
decision making process as a member of the clinical and community health team
at different levels.
ü Participates
actively in activities against women violence, reproductive health rights, and
child abuse.
ü Be involved actively
in the teaching / learning activities of health professional training.
ü Maintain and expand
continuing learning through self-directing learning.
ü Provide high
quality, culturally sensitive health education and services to all individuals,
family or in the community in order to promote
healthy family life, planned pregnancies and positive parenting
ü Involve male
participation in Reproductive health services
Graduation requirement will be according
to each university rule and regulation. Thus, a student enrolled in the BSc
midwifery program is eligible for graduation if and only if he/she

Has taken all
the required courses for the program
·
Has obtained a minimum ‘C’ in all theoretical
courses; competent in practical courses
and CGPA of 2.0
·
Student should
be able to pass comprehensive exam of the school (internal examination), both
in theory & practice before graduation.
·
The student
should pass the comprehensive external examination administered by external
examiners (MOH).
·
If not able to
pass both internal and/or external exam, she/he will be delayed for a minimum
of 3 months and then shall sit for the re exam.
·
Pass
successfully and complete internship/professional practice program.
·
Has carried out
a student research project on a selected and agreed topic of research problem
and scored a minimum of ' C' grade in his/her thesis report.
Up on successful completion of this
program the graduate will be awarded “The Degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc)
in Midwifery” in English and “(የባችለር
ሳይንስ
ዲግሪ
በሚድዊይፍሪ)“
in Amharic.
