UN ECA Delivers Public Lecture at Dire Dawa University
The United Nations Economic Commission for
Africa (ECA) team delivered a public lecture to economics staff and students at
Dire Dawa University.
The delegation, led by Dr. Zuzana
Schiwidrowski, Director of the Socio-Economic Development Division, presented
on the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2), focusing on its
outcomes and implications for African countries.
The lecture emphasized the importance of
moving beyond GDP as the sole measure of economic progress. It highlighted
major global priorities such as Expanding investment in human capital,
Enhancing crisis resilience and their relevance for Africa including increased
policy space and financing, linking social investment to macroeconomic
stability and climate resilience, and advancing the Multidimensional
Vulnerability Index.
The session also covered ECA-led initiatives
addressing Africa’s key challenges like inequality, climate vulnerability and
institutional capacity while exploring opportunities through digital
innovation, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and youth-driven
transformation.
The event concluded with an engaging Q&A
session, fostering meaningful dialogue between the UN ECA team and
participants.
